Is $150k a good salary? 1.8x the median household income

By the census it is a very good salary. By the paycheck it is about $9,480 a month. By the city and the Tuesday number, it can feel like anything from plenty to tight. Here is the math for each.

Yes, by almost any measure. $150,000 is about 1.8 times the 2024 U.S. median household income of $83,730, and that median is for a whole household, not one earner.1 After federal income tax and FICA a single filer takes home roughly $9,480 a month, an estimate.2 Where it stops feeling like a good salary is the city, and the Tuesday number.

The short answer

  • $150,000 is 1.8x the 2024 median U.S. household income of $83,730, a gap of $66,270, and the median counts every earner in the house.1
  • Take-home is about $9,483 a month for a single filer after federal income tax and FICA, an estimate before state tax and any retirement deferral.2
  • The city moves the answer more than a raise does. In SmartAsset's 2026 study, a $100,000 salary is worth $91,868 in Oklahoma City and $72,444 on average across 69 cities.3
  • What decides how it feels is the leftover on an ordinary Tuesday: take-home minus rent, dated bills, and minimums. Read it off the statement, not from memory.

How does $150k compare to the median?

Real median household income was $83,730 in 2024, not statistically different from $82,690 in 2023.1 Divide $150,000 by $83,730 and you get 1.79, so $150,000 is nearly 1.8 times the middle. The comparison is generous to the household, too: median household income adds up everyone who lives there. One person on $150,000 out-earns the typical home by $66,270.

Take-home is an estimate: single filer, standard deduction, 2026 federal brackets and FICA, no state tax, no retirement deferral. The median row treats the household as one single filer for comparison. Sources: Census P60-286 (2024), IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32.

$150,000$12,500$9,4831.79x
$200,000$16,667$12,3312.39x

Notice the take-home column grows slower than the gross column: $150,000 is 1.5x a $100,000 salary before tax and 1.44x after. Is $100k a good salary and is $80k a good salary run the same math for the two figures people most often compare against, and $150,000 clears both by a wide margin.

How much is $150k a month after taxes?

About $9,483, or about $4,377 every two weeks. Here is the 2026 math for a single filer with the standard deduction.2

An estimate: single filer, standard deduction, federal income tax and FICA only, before state tax and retirement deferral. Source: IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (2026 tax year).

Take-home per month (est.)$9,483

The effective federal rate is about 24%, against about 21% at $100,000. That is the 24% bracket doing its work: the last $28,200 of taxable income is taxed at 24 cents on the dollar, and FICA takes another 7.65 cents. In a state with income tax, run the monthly figure 3 to 6 percent lower.

Where does $150k stop feeling like $150k?

In the expensive cities. SmartAsset's 2026 study took a $100,000 salary through 69 large U.S. cities, subtracting taxes and adjusting for cost of living.3 In Oklahoma City that salary is worth $91,868. Across all 69 cities the average is $72,444. Manhattan comes in last, with a 29.7% effective tax rate before cost of living is even counted.

Oklahoma City (highest)$91,86892%
Study-wide average, 69 cities$72,44472%
Manhattan (lowest)29.7% effective tax rate, before cost of living

The gap between the top city and the average is $19,424 on $100,000, about a fifth of it. The study did not run $150,000. If the same shares held, which is an assumption and not a finding, the top city would keep about $137,800 and the average city about $108,700, a spread near $29,100. That is the size of the city effect: bigger than most raises, and invisible on the offer letter.

So the honest answer has a location attached. In most of the country $150,000 is a very good salary. In the handful of cities where housing and state tax both run high, it buys roughly the life a $100,000 salary buys somewhere cheaper.

What is the Tuesday number?

The amount left in checking on an ordinary Tuesday, mid-month, after rent and the dated bills have cleared and before the next paycheck lands. It is the number that tells you whether a salary is good for you, as opposed to good in a census table, and it is where two people on the same $150,000 end up living different lives.

Rent is the biggest line. The 30% rule puts it at $3,750 a month, and a landlord's 3x screen clears up to about $4,167. The typical U.S. asking rent was $1,962 in July 2026, which Zillow says needs $78,488 of income by the 30% rule.4 On $150,000 that rent is 16% of gross and 21% of the estimated take-home. But $3,750, the rule's own ceiling, is 40% of what actually lands, which is why rent at the limit can feel tight on a salary every rule calls comfortable. How much rent can I afford explains why the rule uses gross and what to use instead.

Take two single renters, both taking home $9,483 a month. The figures below are examples, not benchmarks.

Example months, not benchmarks. Subscription lines are the C+R Research itemized averages: $219 overall, $377 for Gen Z (2022 survey).

Renter A has a Tuesday number that clears groceries, transport, a savings goal, and a mistake or two. Renter B is on the same salary and is one car repair from a card balance. Nothing in the census, the tax table, or the city study can see the difference. Only the statement can.

The subscription line is the one people get most wrong. Asked to guess, people say $86 a month. Itemized from real statements, the average is $219, and 74% say recurring charges are easy to forget.5 On this salary $219 is 2.3% of take-home, small enough to ignore and large enough to add up to $1,596 a year more than you thought you were paying.

When is $150k not enough?

Three situations come up more than the rest.

  1. Two high-cost inputs at once. Expensive-city rent plus a state income tax, plus a car, can turn $9,483 into a Tuesday number that looks like a much smaller salary's.
  2. Spending that arrived with the offer. In the 24% bracket, each extra $100 of monthly spending takes about $146 of salary to fund, so upgrades cost more than they look. Loan minimums do not shrink when income grows, either.
  3. Nothing put aside. At this income the question shifts from "can I cover the month" to "what is the money doing". How much should I have saved at 30 puts a number on the first goal.

The short version: $150,000 is 1.8 times the median, about $9,483 a month before state tax, and worth a fifth less in an average city than in the cheapest one. Whether it is good for you is the Tuesday number, read off 90 days of statements with the subscriptions included. If the decision is large, a house, a cross-country move for a raise, ask someone licensed to look at your full picture. The math here is federal only and single filer only, and both change the answer.

Questions people ask

Is $150k a good salary for a single person?

Yes. It is 1.8 times the 2024 median household income of $83,730, and that median covers whole households, not single earners. A single filer takes home about $9,483 a month after federal tax and FICA, an estimate before state tax. What erodes it is an expensive city plus high fixed costs.

How much is $150k after taxes?

About $113,791 a year, or $9,483 a month, for a single filer with the 2026 standard deduction and no state income tax. Federal income tax is about $24,734 and FICA is $11,475, an effective federal rate near 24%. In a state with income tax, expect a few percent less than that.

Is $150k a good salary in a big city?

It depends on the city more than the salary. SmartAsset's 2026 study found a $100,000 salary is worth $91,868 in Oklahoma City and $72,444 on average across 69 cities, with Manhattan lowest on a 29.7% effective tax rate. At $150,000 the same shares would put the spread near $29,000, an assumption, not a finding.

What tax bracket is $150k in?

The 24% bracket, for a single filer in 2026. After the $16,100 standard deduction, taxable income is $133,900, and the 24% band runs from $105,700 to $201,775, so the last $28,200 is taxed at 24%. The effective rate is lower: about 16.5% for income tax alone, about 24% with FICA included.
